ONCAT Funds Innovative Project at St. Clair College to Support Postsecondary Learner Mobility
Melissa Kakuk, John Lopez, Biagio Lattuca, David Potocek and Martina Patee are involved in research into flexible learning pathways, at St. Clair College on June 13, 2025.
St. Clair College is proud to be among the recipients of funding from the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT), which recently announced $2.04 million in support for 29 institutional projects across Ontario aimed at improving postsecondary learner mobility.
With ONCAT's support, St. Clair College is launching a new project entitled "Improving Program Delivery to Enhance Learner Mobility." The initiative, led by the Research and Innovation department, focuses on modularizing courses, standardizing assessments, and developing bridging tools to create more flexible and accessible learning pathways, beginning with the Community and Justice Services program
"St. Clair College is advancing a research-informed, student-centered vision of education by leveraging digital innovation to create flexible, accessible pathways that support learner mobility and lifelong learning," said Dr. Karamjeet K. Dhillon, the Director of Research and Innovation at St. Clair College. "When academics and research align, innovation becomes institutional."
"This is a fantastic opportunity for our faculty and students to shape modular, accessible curriculum options that support credit transfer and student success," added David Potocek, Project Research Manager.
"Working with Research and Innovation is a new endeavour for the Community and Justice Services program, and one that we are very excited to engage in," said Melissa Kakuk, the program coordinator of the program. "It will allow us to look at ways to improve the student experience and allow our students a chance to participate in the research process."
ONCAT, established in 2011 and funded by the Government of Ontario, works to remove barriers to credit transfer and create clear, student-centered pathways across the province's colleges, universities, and Indigenous Institutions.

Panel Showcases Community-Driven Research at the Canadian Sociological Association Conference
On June 2, St. Clair College professors Dr. Kyle Jackson and Dr. Amy Peirone, in collaboration with Andrea DeKeseredy of the University of Alberta led a compelling panel at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted this year by George Brown College in Toronto entitled "Beyond the Ivory Tower". The session brought together academics, activists, and community leaders to discuss how community-based research can amplify marginalized voices and actively contribute to social transformation. The panel, chaired by Dr. Jackson, featured two impactful presentations led by St. Clair College's current student and graduate researchers.
Sarah Wilkins, a recent graduate of the Honours Bachelor of Applied Arts in Social Justice and Legal Studies (BASJ) program, presented findings from the College's NSERC-funded youth homelessness research project, supervised by Dr. Kyle Jackson.
The study centers the lived experiences of youth facing homelessness, drawing from in-depth interviews that examine the intersecting roles of economic precarity, identity, community supports, and mental health. The project aims to translate these insights into preventative programming and advocacy, in partnership with Family Services Windsor-Essex and other local stakeholders.
BASJ graduate and recent UWindsor Masters grad, Madison Dekok alongside Dr. Amy Peirone delivered a second presentation focused on two applied gender-based violence projects, one of which was funded by the WE-SPARK Health Institute through an Igniting Discovery Grant. Their presentation explored how adaptive, community-led research methods can navigate power, priorities, and partnerships. They highlighted how relationship-based approaches generate more inclusive, actionable, and grounded knowledge, particularly in sectors that are often under-resourced and over-consulted.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the Research Department on the Igniting Discovery IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) Project. As I am going into my fourth year of the Social Justice and Legal Studies, I have spent multiple semesters learning about IPV, as well as different research techniques and believe that this project has let me showcase the skills I have learned thus far. For this project, I was a part of a team who was tasked with developing an informational toolkit on IPV that would help inform service providers about survivors of IPV. I spent time researching relevant and current articles on IPV about how the language used by service providers matters and is important in the journey of recovery of survivors. My time working within the WE-SPARK project has furthered my understanding of the concepts I am learning in my program and my passion for research and community development.”
